Membership: Who We Are

The LGBT Giving Network is a new group of organizations that are working together to engage and cultivate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied donors to help secure leadership gifts and long-term financial support to build stronger LGBT communities.

The LGBT Giving Network was formed in 2006 to address the need for improved engagement between non-profit charities, donors and businesses interested in LGBT communities and issues.

Its founding member organizations represent a cross-section of the diverse LGBT communities. LGBT philanthropy is increasing and the purpose of this network is to build the collective understanding of financial implications of philanthropy, nurture the relationship between donors and charities and to provide a point of contact for businesses and supporters.

Background:

Over the past decade, philanthropy has grown significantly. During this time there has also been a noticeable emergence of new levels of major gift donations not seen before within the LGBT community by leading gay philanthropists in Canada and the United States.

In the United States, LGBT philanthropy has established itself as a leading field of research and activity that has grown into a strategic tool to advance the cause of LGBT equality rights. In recognition of this trend, a small group of individuals from a number of LGBT organizations and causes came together in the summer of 2006 to discuss ways of furthering the development of LGBT leadership in philanthropy in order to support LGBT issues, advocacy and causes.

Broader discussions of what was taking place in the United States led to the idea of producing a national conference on LGBT Philanthropy. This conference, however, was only seen as the beginning of what could be possible. This group has imagined a longer term vision of ongoing activity designed to further the development of LGBT philanthropy that would leave a lasting legacy for future generations in such areas as health care, education, youth, arts and culture, social services and many other fields of human endeavor in LGBT communities.

The long-term vision of the LGBT Giving Network has defined six key areas or pillars for future development to advance LGBT issues and causes. They are as follows:

  1. EDUCATION – delivery of workshops, conferences, presentations designed to educate fundraisers, donors, prospective donors and volunteers about philanthropy and leadership in the community.

  2. RECOGNITION – promoting leadership in our community through public recognition and stewardship of those individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to LGBT issues and causes by making leadership or planned gifts or serving in a senior volunteer capacity.

  3. RESEARCH – promote academic research on donor motivation, LGBT giving and other areas of queer philanthropy.

  4. INFORMATION RESOURCES – develop web sites and printed publications as a resource for those interested in LGBT issues and causes from a philanthropic perspective – for example, a National Online Directory of LGBT Charitable Organizations and/or a Donors and Granters Guide to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues.

  5. CAPACITY BUILDING – Assistance to LGBT organizations and causes on how to increase revenue generating capacity and administrative and management support to expand their organizations.

  6. FUNDRAISING and ENDOWMENTS – Create opportunities to direct funds from donors to establish endowments or donor advised funds that specifically address LGBT issues and causes.
